The World Cup third place tracker explains why some Round of 32 opponents are still listed as pools. In the 48-team format, the top two teams in each group advance, plus eight third-place teams.
| Question | Short answer | Source / evidence |
|---|---|---|
| How many third-place teams advance? | Eight third-place teams enter the Round of 32. | NBC Sports format summary |
| Why are bracket slots provisional? | A slot can depend on which groups produce the qualifying third-place teams. | FIFA knockout bracket |
| What should I check first? | Points, goal difference, goals for, and group rank. | SB Nation third-place standings |
| Where does this affect picks? | Printable picks and pool entries should wait until the third-place cut line is clear. | CBS printable wall chart |
How the cut line works
The third-place table is sorted by points, then goal difference, then goals for. The eighth team is the visible cut line; the ninth team is the first outside the current pool.
Why this matters for the bracket
Some Round of 32 slots say "3rd Group C/E/F/H/I" instead of naming a team. That is not an error. It means the bracket needs the final third-place combination before the opponent can be locked.
How to use it for pools
If your pool accepts picks before the group stage is complete, mark third-place opponents as provisional. If your pool waits for the knockout bracket, lock entries only after the official fixture path is confirmed.
